Valkyrie Conversion

Recently I’ve been 3D printing conversion parts for a pair of Valkyries I’m hoping to bring to a tournament soon. I really like the aesthetic of twin turbines for wings instead of the static wings that come with the kit so that’s what I’ve been working on. I recently posted this conversion on my Etsy store. On top of that, an article over at 3DPrintingIndustry.com was written up about my (then) unfinished conversion.

I ran some LEDs through the ducts in the wings and wired them inside of the plane. This is my first conversion with electronics involved and it was all very straightforward.

Imperial Knights (and Sabres)

First things first. I’ve printed out some Sabre Defense platforms with my 3D printer

And primed them:

Next, I’ve put together four Imperial Knights for the next 1850pts tournament I am entering. I based their paint scheme on the Lannister armour from Game of Thrones.

Cracked Mud and Painted Death Korps

So I threw together some cracked mud bases for my Death Korps of Krieg.

  1. Paint a lumpy surface of Liquitex Resin Sand across the entire top of the base and let fully dry.
  2. Paint over the entire top of the lumpy surface with a dark color.
  3. Dump 3 FULL medium brush loads of Citadel Agrellan Earth onto the base and spread evenly. (This is something like 15 layers of paint all at once, do NOT scrimp on the paint here.)
  4. Using a heat gun on it’s low setting, slowly move the heat across the base until a “Jell-O Pudding”-skin forms.
  5. Once the skin forms, move the heat gun in and apply directly until the cracking you want is desired.
  6. Paint/dry-brush as desired.
  7. ???
  8. Profit!

Scratch Built Warhammer 40K Titan #oneweekproject

So some of you may remember my 30 Points of Cryx in 3 Days Challenge about a year ago. Recently I obtained a 3D printer and I’ve given myself a new challenge: a table-top quality Warhammer 40K Battle Titan in one week.

Now this titan is far from done. As I type this I am re-printing a failed foot/pod-thing where the first one printed very poorly and the quality, I feel, was unacceptable. As a matter of fact, I doubt the beast will be finished by the Apocalypse game this Saturday (32 hours from now), but I still feel it’s worth fielding and should still be an awesome site to see.

I’ve been 3D modeling the next piece of the Titan as I’m printing out the previous piece.

I started with the leg pods. As I scoured the internet looking for reference materials I found a lon of silhouetted images of titans with stepped legs, so that’s what I started with first. With my design, you just fit the center ring onto the bottom of the knee cap PVC (45 degree elbow coupling) and the rest of the layers drape down from that.

The next thing I did was start designing the brackets and such to fit around the legs and designed knee pads to be glued to the brackets. I found a 3D model on Thingiverse with the Adeptus Mechanicus icon and joined it with one of the kneepads.

Some Facebook friends from my local gaming club’s page gave me some inspiration for designing the two primary weapons for the Titan.

I decided against the Iron Man face plate for two reasons. First, I thought it would be a pain in the ass to attach to the PVC in a way I would be happy with. Secondly, I though it would be too iconic and recognizable. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I just want this a little more generic and Warhammer 40K-ish.

I recently decided against me second face choice because I feel its a little too plain and , again, it needs to be more fierce and Warhammer-y.

So I think I’s finally decided to go with my third option and I’m going to be printing out the lower half of the Predator face mask. Again, I found a model on Thingiverse that I think will go well.

3D Printing Conversion Bits

So A few weeks ago, I decided to get into 3D printing and I bought a 3D printer on amazon.com. It seemed good for the price and people were giving it a great review (again for the price).

Sadly, the printer never showed up and seemed to get lost in the mail. I ordered another one.

Again, the printer got lost in the mail. Evidently, at least in my experience, these things fall off trucks. Like… a lot.

So I finally bit the bullet and decided to go the “generic rip off” way of things and picked up the same model and make as the printer I bought before, only without the logos and marketing and picked a Chinese knockoff on eBay for around 70% what I paid on Amazon (twice).

I have to tell you: it… is… amazing.

With no trouble at all I got the thing unpacked, leveled, aligned, calibrated and printing like a boss!

Here I am printing a black cube for funsies:

After the cube I printed the tank top conversion bit I’ve been working on in SketchUp Make for a while.

After cleaning up the bit. I placed it onto one of my Sister of Battle Adepta Sororitas Rhinos to convert it to an Immolator.

Last but not least, now I am printing out 4 more tank tops for my other rhinos. Looks to be about a 9 and a half hour long build.

A Tournament and The New Adepta Sororitas

Had a great time at the tournament on Sunday. Lost very hard but met lots of new, great people.

  1. My first match (of three) was against a Grey Knight player and per usual my Salamanders just could not hold up to all the psy-bolt spam. Lost 2-15.
  2. My second match was against an Eldar (Space Marine allies) player. DIdn’t get tabled but I was left with my Land Raider and a single tactical marine at the bottom of turn 5. Lost 2-19.
  3. My last match was against an under-pointed Chaos Space Marines player. He had heard the tournament was 1500 points and was using a Dark Eldar vehicle as a Land Raider proxy. Still seemed like he was light on points and that make my victory sour. Won 13-2.

Here’s a picture from my second match. I didn’t get any other pictures because it was a pretty hectic day and I just forgot to whip my phone out.

In other news, the new Sisters of Battle digital only codex came out!

Likes:

  • Points are adjusted to be more balanced across the board.
  • The addition of War Hymns make melee fights less of a pain in the ass due to T3.
  • Some of the Relics are awesome.

Dislikes:

  • Only one Act of Faith per unit per battle. (With a couple exceptions)
  • Most of the Relics are shit.

So in the spirit of building a new 6th Edition Adepta Sororitas army, I’m starting with a model I picked up from Hitech Miniatures.

This “girl in terminator armour” is going to play as my Canoness HQ. The blade is a bit “Soul Calibur-y” but I think it works as a Blade of Admonition.

Other than scraping off the spiderwebs from her grieves and shoulder pads, the only thing I’ve done is added a bolt pistol bit I had laying around.

In all, I am extremely pleased with Hitech Miniatures and the quality of their casting.

Objective Markers (And Scouts)

So I’ve been playing a lot of practice games of 1500pts of Warhammer 40,000. So far not a lot of victories for the Imperium of Man (Salamanders).

I got my Salamanders Special Edition Space Marines Codex last week and I’ve been trying out quite a few different army lists.

On Monday I faced blobs and tanks of IG and brought a lot of heavy support. I got demolished. Wednesday I brought some Demolishers of me own along with my Sternguard; I did better against the Orks in Trucks but we tied.

Speaking of that game with the Orks, we played The Scouring and I got to use my Victory Point markers a made last week.

I added magnets to the bottom of the markers so that the points values can be reassigned to different markers and I wont get an advantage to knowing which marker leads to which points.

Finally, I got bored last night and built some Scouts.
